Richard's first trip on Jemima-D

Saturday, 14th August 2010

Got train from Birmingham to Romiley via Stockpoprt and Manchester Piccadilly with John Cooper. Found Jemima safely moored by road bridge and went off in search of supplied. Co-op Food website let us down with wrong location of store - wrongly sent to golf course!! Got a few basics from Sainsbury's Local and excellent local greengrocer (local greengages a particular treat!).

Set off after lunch, learned to steer and use pole when stuck, stopped for a cuppa, forgot to re-engage engine and rang Mike for advice! Found our way through tunnel with only 2 bumps and then over aqueduct towards Marple. Arrived at bottom of flight of locks about 5.30 and moored up. Walked into Marple, got an indian take-away and went to Co-op. Nice photos of old Co-op buildings to upload onto flikr!

Sunday 15th August 2010

Mike joined us at about 11.30 and briefed us on operating the locks. John was skipper for the first 8 with me up top opening and closing gates with Mike. For second 8 we swapped jobs. At lock 10 ran into angine trouble and had to moor up for half an hour and have a tea break in the full lock.

Arrived at Marple basin and moored up about 6.00. Mike left and John and I had a walk around, then walked to station with him at about 6.30. I went to the Ring O'Bells for a pint and to charge phone then warmed upleftover curry for tea.

Monday 16th August 2010

Woke just before 10, opened curtains and saw a floating garden centre pass me. Got up, washed hair, did some housework and went into town. Had watch and shoes repaired, lunch on boat, afternoon nap, supper in pub.

Tuesday 17th August

Tidied boat in the morning and nipped into town. Went to meet Emma Cockburn from station at 1.30 but got lost on the way, eventually found her at 2.00. Had picnic lunch and set out about 3.30pm. First stop sanitory station to empty elsan and fill up water tank. Got to Higher Poynton boat yards and moorings about 7.00. Borrowed metal hooks form another boater and went to pub for a meal.

Wednesday 18th August

Set out mid morning, turned boat to go back to boat yards to fill with diesel - 100 went in very slowly as air release valve didn't seem to be working. Turned again and headed south. Had 5 unsuccessful attempts to moor up for a cuppa in very shallow water near Bollington. A friendly boater had to push us off the last time. Got to outskirts of Macclesfield early evening and found good morring just before large chemical works. Walked to local pub for a couple of pints and to plan a co-op project we're working on.

Thursday 19th August

Up at 8.00, away by 9.00. Arrived in Macclesfield centre at 10.00 and found a less than ideal mooring to leave Jemima on as it was the only one going and we had a train to catch at 11.19. Left well tied up on 2 spikes, a ring and a bollard.
